Using recycled cardboard in food packaging risks contaminating food with mineral oils

In tests on exper­i­men­tal packs of fine noo­dles, researchers in Zurich, Switzer­land, found that food rapidly absorbed 10 times the rec­om­mended limit for con­cen­tra­tion of these con­t­a­m­i­nat­ing oils from the trans­port box. The envi­ron­men­tal ben­e­fits of replac­ing petro­leum prod­ucts with bio-based sub­sti­tutes are clear: they could sequester car­bon diox­ide, put less bur­den on land­fills and, in some cases, even break down faster.
