Learn more -Public companies in the U.S. are, by law, required to disclose financial results only. Then why are a majority of annual reports increasingly addressing social responsibility, sustainable practices and corporate giving?
A RMIT University Melbourne study shows that when it comes to sustainability, the CHEP system of Returnable Produce Crates (RPC) wins hands down
Editor’s Note: Is plant-based packaging that far fetched? According to Rocco Papaila, Senior VP, PepsiCo Advanced Research maybe not. The environmental benefits of replacing petroleum products with bio-based substitutes are clear: they could sequester carbon dioxide, put less burden on landfills and, in some cases, even break down faster. But, bioplastics currently make up less than one percent of the U.S. plastics market. So, while the industry is excited about the potential, there are practical challenges yet to address.
New survey shows that sustainability is becoming an integrated part of the majority of business operations today, providing benefits such as lower costs and an improved brand.
A new state law taking effect this summer is designed to help track down people who steal plastic pallets — the type of delivery trays often left unattended behind stores. Beginning July 20, there will be new Arizona restrictions on any firm in the business of recycling, shredding, reselling or destroying plastic pallets.
According to the latest study of the pallet market by the Freedonia Group the US demand for pallets is forecast to rise 6.1 percent per year to 1.3 billion pallets in 2015, valued at $15 billion. This pace will represent a rebound from the 2005- 2010 period, when demand fell 4.5 percent annually, reflecting the decline in manufacturers’ shipments between 2007 and 2009 and only the partial rebound through 2010. Through 2015, pallet demand gains will be driven by an expected advance in manufacturers’ shipments from their low 2010 base.

Many companies are reaping the financial and environmental benefits of using reusable packaging. But every supply chain is different, so companies must identify and measure their unique factors to determine whether reusables are the right solution
The RPA Asset Loss Working Group is conducting an industry survey to help us identify the average annual loss of reusable assets by industry sector. Asset loss presents a significant market risk for reusable transport packaging manufacturers and users. To help us address this issue the RPA is undertaking several initiatives to help us to better address the underlying issues and identify solutions which could help mitigate losses by our customers.
Many companies are reaping the financial and environmental benefits of incorporating reusable packaging solutions into their supply chain. However, every supply chain is different and this requires that a company identify and measure its own unique factors to determine whether reusables are the right solution.
