New Study Shows Alternatives to Extended Producer Responsibility Achieve High Recycling Rates with Less Cost and Administrative Bureaucracy

U.S. com­mu­ni­ties and states that have imple­mented alter­na­tives to extended pro­ducer respon­si­bil­ity (EPR) poli­cies are achiev­ing high munic­i­pal solid waste recy­cling rates at rea­son­able costs, while also address­ing a wider spec­trum of the waste stream than narrowly-focused EPR man­dates, accord­ing to a new study con­ducted by con­sult­ing firm SAIC for the Gro­cery Man­u­fac­tur­ers Asso­ci­a­tion (GMA). Oper­at­ing from 210 loca­tions world­wide and pro­vid­ing a pool of over 170 mil­lion RPCs (reusable plas­tic con­tain­ers), IFCO recently opened its fifth U.S. ser­vice cen­ter for RPCs in the U.S. This move sup­ports the con­tin­ued expan­sion of RPC use by lead­ing gro­cery retail­ers through­out the U.S. and Canada, includ­ing Wal­mart, Kroger, HEB, Loblaws and Safe­way.
